Not sure if anybody here can help me.
Customer has an old Unity3.1(5). They have purchased a new Unity Connection 8 in HA mode. My task is to export all configuration from old Unity and import to the new UC.
My plan is:
1. DIRT backup the Unity 3.1(5) - successfully
2. Create a Unity3.1(5) with VMWare and DIRT recovery - successfully but with no integration with CCM. In fact, I have VMWare of Unity 4.0(5). I uninstall the Unity and reinstall 3.1(5) with no problem. Then I recover the DIRT. I rerun the DBWalker to clean all the errors. All services are up. I do not have system key in VMWare, so I do not think I can do integration with CCM, which I do not think necessary.
3. Upgrade to Unity 4.0(5) - failed at last step. It asked me to copy all installation temp file and send to TAC.
4. Use COBRAS to export and import from the production UC 8.
I am wondering if it is a valid migration plan. Is that possible to upgrade Unity from vesion 3.1.5 to 4.0.5 with VMWare without licenses. What I need is the configuration files only. It is a stand-alone VM system.
Thanks,

From the Design Guide for Cisco Unity Virtualization:
Cisco supports virtualizing the following servers:
•Cisco Unity application servers—Version 7.0(2), or version 8.0(3) or later.
•Cisco Unity voice-recognition servers—Version 7.0(2), or version 8.0(3) or later
I suspect your upgrade is failing due to the hardware requirements check. Are you using virtualization for a swing server?

Hi,
What I really need is not a working Unity in version 4.0(5). I only need it to do a COBRAS export, which I will import in the newly created UC 8. So the system I am building is just a temparory virtual server.
The service is up in VMWare in version 3.1(5), although there is no port and no TSP installed. But it cannot be upgraded to verion 4 for some reason.
Thanks a lot for your help.

That temporary server process is referred to as a "Swing Server" during upgrades. And to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure what (if any) checks are performed by the upgrade utility... but it's always a good assumption in similar situations.
With your 3.x install, are you using Exchange or Domino? Voice Messaging or Unified Messaging?
I think your upgrade methodology is sound, there are just SO many "moving parts" to getting Unity working and they can cause major headaches. And the upgrade approach will change substantially depending on which messaging/failover/integration you're using.
Have you run the Unity System Preparation Assistant on the VMWare instance of 3.x to verify that everything is in working order and ready for the upgrade? If SPA is a-okay, have you satisfactorily completed all of the upgrade steps, without any errors?

I have a Unity version 4.0(5) in VMWare modeoriginally. I firstly uninstall Unity and install version 3.1(5) on it successfully. I run DIRT recovery and worked as well. I run DBWalker to correct all the errors. I then tried to upgrade back to 4.0(5). First, I run installation prep assis and it was stuck somewhere, but after a reboot and re-run, it said ok. I start to install Unity version 4.0(5) now. However, almost in the end of the installation after the SQL scripting, I got the error messages, asking me to collect all the logs and send to TAC (I do not think TAC will support, since this is too old version.) (see attached screen shot).
I then looked into the Osqldump_xxx.txt log files and found this error:
FATAL UPGRADE ERROR: Schema version is not present in the
UnityDb.Servers table
OK. I then restart from beginning and extend the schema (although I thought the schema was maintained during the downgrade) before upgrading. And the result is the same.
I have been struggling with this for a couple of days. I could not create thousands of subscribers from scratch plus ask users to initialize mailboxes.
It is a voicemail-only system, with standalone domain.
What am I missing? If I uninstall and reinstall the SQL, would the Unity configuration be lost?
Please help.
Thanks a lot.

TAC can do alot more with your logs than I can do on here. I suggest you contact them.
I'd be interested to know what they say about your upgrade approach, or if there's a better way I haven't heard.
