Hello guys,
i would like to ask you if you can suggest me some reading about voice communication.
Not only in cisco, but something where the theoretical part is well described and where i can learn """"anything"""" about voice.
I'm working as ccna r&s for a telco company, and now boss asked me to learn voice so i can go and configure cpe router for voice (voip and legacy communication) but i do not know anything about
thx for your support

Hi Andrea,
If you are totally new to Collaboration/Voice you should consider taking a short training from one of the institutes to get a hands on exp of the collab endpoints. Other than that reading and learning will take too much time, there are some good videos available on the Community itself as well as on youtube which deal with IP telephony basics, i would recommend that you start with those videos as they will be easier to sit through and will provide more info in short time.

ANYTHING about voice, would mean countless hours reading or watching videos or presencial classes, and you'd still be far from learning everything there is, as a lot of that, comes from actually working with voice over the years.
I'd suggest you start by focusing on the products you will interact with, and then take it from there.
If you have never done this before, IMHO, it would be in your boss's best interest to hire a consultant for this project, and you can then see what he's doing, see what he configured, and then find related material to understand it, to then later modify it if required.

Thx guys,
i would like to precise that this is not a project but voice will be my future in the company, so what i'm asking for is a nice book "where to start" learning about voice because i do not know a thing about it.
Boss do now want me skilled like a senior engineer tomorrow, he just told me to start to study.
have you any nice book you like to suggest me for this purpose?

Agreed with Manish, Go through you tube videos. There are lot of good videos available for VoIP . Once you understand what basic VoIP is, how does this work, pro and cons, its history and future, its evolution, then start with protocols like SIP, H.323 and MGCP. Simple google the name of these protocols and you will see lot of good documents for these protocols.

Thx Guys, i'll watch some videos...
btw i have a really dumb question:
is every voice traffic passing throught a router voip traffic? even if it is connected to some bri/pri lines? 'Because i tought these were analog lines...
ok, maybe 2nd question could be: should i be awarned about analog lines? do they come into networking jobs?
thx a lot

You will see ISDN traffic ( like q931 ) on gateways for PRI/BRI lines, there is primarily H323/MGCP/SIP traffic though based on how you connect the CUCM to the gateway and the type of connection to the Telco. Analog lines do come into picture as well like if you have FAX machines connected to analog ports on the gateways.

Use the CBT nuggets free one week trial and watch all the videos for the CCNA Collab (New Voice cert) exam one. This is 210-060 CICD.
Set up the small lab which the instructor has set up and go from there.
