Campus MPLS - Wireless Controller or DC Services Connectivity

Hello Everyone,

I am working on one design related to campus MPLS network.

1. There are two core switches in VSS which will act as P devices.

2. There are two distribution switches in VSS which will act as PE1.

3. There are another two distribution devices in VSS which will act as PE2.

Design for core, distribution and access switches are clear. Now my question is where should be the data center services like wireless controllers, IP Telephony servers, Firewalls and WAN/Internet Routers.

As per path isolation design guide from cisco in below links (Figure 45) also diagram attached, its shows to more PE devices for data center servcies and two more for PEs for WAN and Internet. Customer dont have extra PE devices.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Network_Virtualization/PathIsol.html#wp82119

Should this be terminated on one of the existing PE design or Is it possible to connect it on MPLS core P devices considering core dont have any VRF and only MPLS tagging will be enable there.

Any support in the above regard will be helpful.

Thanks.

All servers you have mentioned could be in their own vrfs. You don't have to have routers that are P only. Routers could be P for some vpns but PE for other VPNs.

Hello Rais,

Thanks for your inputs.

1. All Servers for instance Call manager will be in VOICE VRF, Wireless Controller will be in WIRELESS VRF, ISP line will be in INTERNET VRF and so on.

2. My question, Is it possible to connect this servers on P switch? As we cannot create VRFs on P switch it will do only mpls switching.

3. As per Cisco path isolation guide campus MPLS design (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Network_Virtualization/PathIsol.html#wp82236) its shown that there are no devices directly connect on P switches but dedicated PE devices are used for services like WAN and Internet. I am assuming for Call servers, Wireless Controllers and other services this will be connect on share or dedicated PE switches.

Like you said switch can be both P& PE at one time. Is it recommended/possible to created VRFs on P switches in the campus design. If VRFs are created then to advertise this BGP should also be configured as per my understanding.

Your inputs in the regard will be appreciated.

Thanks

If you can't create VRF on a P switch, then I don't think it's possible to connect a server to this switch.
