Hi
I have a use confusion between, L2 VPN, and L3 VPN.
I know little about how MPLS and normal VPN works.
1. what are the differences between L2 VPN and L3 VPN , are these L2 and L3 VPNs related to MPLS ?, 2. bcz when I typed l3 or l2 VNP on Google, MPLS always comes into picture, why MPLS coming with these terms ?
3. I know, how to configure IPSEC VPN over GRE, what kind of VPN is it ? I think it is L3 VPN. isn't it?
4.Can we have L2/L3 VPN without MPLS, ?
5. can I configure L2 VPN without MPLS ?
6. In one of the project I saw DMVPN, can we have L2 and L3 DMVPN ?
7. Do we really need , IPSEC, and GRE to implement VPN ?
8.I think IPSEC and GRE supports only L3 VPN ?
Could you please give me short answers in a understandable manner ?

When we talk about L2VPN or L3VPN in context of MPLS, it means that the forwarding in the service provider core is based on MPLS label operations rather than IP lookup. With L2VPN, the service provider provides layer 2 services to the customers (FR, ATM, Ethernet, VLAN, point-to-multipoint, etc). With L3VPN, service provider provides layer 3 services i.e. based on IP or IPv6.
3. IPSec VPN provides secure VPN solution. It works on L3
4 & 5. i think you can have L2/L3 VPN without MPLS. L2TPv3 can be used to provide L2VPN services across IP core and does not require mpls.
i dont think there is anything as such called L2 DMVPN. DMVPN is L3 n works using NHRP
7. Not Really.
8. Yes
