simple question. Is it possible/supported to install ISE on a bare metal server? HP, DELL, etc.

No, your only option for bare metal is with the Secure Network Server aka SNS-3xxx SKU c220 based appliances/servers. All other hardware, including the standard Cisco SKU servers require a hypervisor such as VMware, KVM, Hyper-V, or ACH.

Not that I am aware of officially mentioning it supported or I come across anyone did in production.
May be other option install ESXi and install ISE on top if you like to use own hardware (i am sure you may come across this, just reference i am quoting here)
