Hi,
I had my ASA working from work and the other day I started getting an error:
UNABLE TO LAUNCH DEVICE MANAGER FROM (MY STATIC IP @ HOME)
It used to work fine and I am able to load it on my local network. Someone said it might be my Java version. So I downloaded Java 6 and installed that, no change. Anyone have any ideas on what it might be?

Hi,
This is a known issue with the Java 1.7update 51. The launcher will not work with update51. we are working on it. as a workaround, please launch the ASDM using the webstart.
02-20-2014 05:14 AM
There were several postings online. This may not be the best or only fix but this is what worked for me.
So here is the work-around that I used to resolve the issue.
1. Go to the ASA IP address in IE.
2. Select Continue to website. (This is where it asks if you want to install the ASDM Launcher)
3. In the Address Bar click on "Certificate Error" then "View Certificates."
4. Go to Details tab and select "Copy to File" and export the cert to my desktop using the default DER format.
5. Open Java Control Panel and go to "Security" tab and "Manage Certificates."
6. Selected "Secure Site" in drop down box and clicked "Import."
7. Select "All Files" in drop down box, and selected the Cert that I exported from IE.
Some of my customers told me that the “copy-to” button was grayed out, this is because the IP is not in the trusted zone.
Here is the fix for that if needed
Then use the webstart ASDM if all of the above fails. :-/

"please launch the ASDM using the webstart" = use a web browser and access to : https://theIpOfYourAsa
Click on : Run ASDM
save the file where you want
execute the file you just download
It worked for me with Chrome, Java 7 update 51, ASDM7.1.4 ASA 9.1.3
Edit1: Now if i want to connect to my ASA5510, i use the file that i just download, not the official Cisco ASDM-IDM Launcher
Work with Windows 7 x64. ASDM 7.1.5.100 didn't solve the problem.

Thanks all I had the same issue.....I also changed over to the Java Webstart..........
02-13-2014 10:30 AM
When will this be fixed?
03-20-2014 11:31 PM
There are some other pages on the internet about it:
This is the synopsis of the workaround (at least on Microsoft Windows 7) so that the ASDM-IDM Launcher will work (i.e. not using webstart) even when using "ASA Temporary Self-Signed Certificate":
Now the ASDM-IDM Launcher will work.
This is with Microsoft Windows 7, Java 1.7.0_51, ASA 9.1(4), ASDM 7.1.(5)100

This one solved the problem for me.
Many Thanks ,
01-24-2014 12:23 AM
The solution is(worked for me):
Open IE > go to https://
Regards,
02-04-2014 08:52 PM
I would recommend you to go to mozilla, open its options, find vanced tab and in certificates tab find certificate which`s publisher is your ASA`s ip address, then export it to anywhere, then to import it to Trusted Certificate Authorities through certmgr.msc.
This is working!

I think we need clarification, because this does work on Java 7.51 using my Macbook Pro, or Windows 8.1 box. At my place of work this does fail on all my Win 7 machines.
02-05-2014 12:55 PM
Thanks all I had the same issue.....I also changed over to the Java Webstart..........
02-05-2014 12:57 PM
and I used Mozilla instead.
02-05-2014 01:00 PM
yes Java Webstart works fine, just Windows 7 with the ASDM-IDM Launcher and Java 7.51 causes the error "unable to launch device manager."

We are running an ASA 5555 and were experiencing the "Unable to Launch Device Manager from x.x.x.x" issue. We do not have an Enterprise CA. ASA version 9.1(4) ASDM Version 7.1(5)100 This is what I did to fix it:
1. I launched ASDM from the web start application. IE> https://IP-Of-My-ASA > Run ASDM
2. Configuration > Device Management > Certificate Management > Identity Certificates > Add > Selected Add a new identity certificate radio button > Select (Certificate Subject DN:) > Attribute (Common Name CN) > Value x.x.x.x (ip address of my ASA) > Generate self-signed certificate
3. Device Management > SSL Settings > Added All available Encryption Algorithms > Management Interface > Selected the Certificate with the cn=x.x.x.x (ip address of my ASA) > Fallback Certificate > Selected the Certificate with the cn=x.x.x.x (ip address of my ASA)
4. I exported the Certificate to my desktop. Device Management > Certificate Management > Identity Certificates > Selected the Certificate with the cn=x.x.x.x (ip address of my ASA) > Export > Export to File: Entered "ASA Cert" as the file name > Selected PEM Format (Certificate Only) radio button > Export Certificate
5. Imported Certificate to Trusted Root Certification Authorities. Certmgr.exe > Import > File name you exported in step 4
This worked for our installation and we were able to access ASDM via the client.

Hi all,
I have situations with IE11 were the only option provided in https access is to "Install Java Web Start" even if JRE1.7u51 is already installed. "Run ASDM" as Java Web Start Application is not displayed... (It does not occur with IE10 and lower version or with Firefox)
Workaround is to access directly https://AsaIPaddress/admin/public/asdm.jnlp
Using this url looks to be the easiest way to access ASDM if, for some reasons, you cannot add a certificate on ASA for ASDM administration and have a PC running Java1.7u51 (ASDM must be upgraded to version 7.1(5)100 or higher)
Side note: Once connected to an ASA in this way, you can switch to another ASA even if it is running a lower version of ASDM ;-) (Using Device list->Add then Connect)
This worked here, hope it helps.
