Mainly loopback address is used as router ID since loopbacks interfaces are always up up (ospf and bgp).

For your home lab, you can add several loopback addresses to simulate various networks.   otherwise, you would have to add a device, which could be costly.

L3 switches and routers can have loopback interfaces.

Hi,

A loopback interface is always up and therefore, makes a stable interface. We use this stable interface things like management and routing. Most switches now support routing and will support loopback interfaces. If your switch supports loopback interfaces, then you would use the loopback interface for management or router-id for routing protocols.

Thanks

John
