Hello Everyone,
I want to know that how port utilization is calculated on Router if we have below Tx and Rx Load. Can I combine both Tx and Rx percentile while calculate utilization.
Note :- We have 2gbps P2P link. below example calculated with 2 Gbps link.
Example :- Tx=185/255= 72.54% of the total bandwidth.
Rx=66/255= 25.88% of the total Bandwidth.
If we combine both then it will be 97% of the total bandwidth.
does it impact the performance. Please advice me how to calculate.
Thank you in advance.

It all depends on interface, example for the 100MB full Duplex.
TXLOAD + RXLOAD / 510 = is the results. ( as per yours 185+66/510 = 49% thinking this is 100MB Interface)

Thank you Balaji for your quick response and got some knowledge from you.
I have 1000Mb full duplex.
But here Tx Load = 185/255. Means transmission traffic is more than 70%, so, I want to know whether transmission traffic impact out performance?

Personally i would give always head room to interface not to saturate the link - if i cross near by 80% and link saturation, the performance will be degrading depending on application - this time suggest to upgrade the link capacity and upgrading the port to next level.
Also possible apply QoS policies for better utilization.

Unless you are dealing with a half duplex interface then Tx and Rx operate independently and it is a mistake to combine them to figure out port utilization.
To answer the broader question: as interface utilization gets greater there is generally an impact on performance. It is difficult to identify a percentage where the impact is large enough to be a problem. But certainly before any interface got close to 90 percent I would be looking for ways to reduce its utilization.

Thank you Richard.
I hope, I will get this type of support in future also.
Thank you again.

Hello Balaji,
Good morning
Thank you for your reply. Now my doubt is clear.

if it resolved can you make it as resolved please.

hi @balaji.bandi ,
i want to mesure my Bandwidth utilization, for my case we used i leased link with 20 Mbps,
and the txload 47/255, rxload 254/255.
how can i calculate my bandwitch utlization,
how can i optimize this bandwitch, if i apply the QOS this would resoulve my issue.
thanks in advance.

There is a significant difference between your transmit level and your receive level. Would I be correct in assuming that your transmit traffic is mostly requests for data and your receive traffic is mostly receiving the requested data? I am not sure that QOS will be very effective in dealing with this. Is there a possibility of increasing the capacity of this link?

QoS may resolve the issue, depends how you like to apply. Queing always helps (when the bandwidth is limitation).
