We have a wide range of switches and I'm

trying to find a quick way to tell if it has an IOS or a CAT image. Using the sh ver I'm unable to tell. Is there a quick way to do this? Thank you.

Using show ver, if it says "Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software" then you are running IOS.

If it doesn't, then you are probably running CatOS.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the IOS version will probably be 11 or higher, whereas the CatOS version will be lower than 9.

Example of IOS (output of show ver):

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) C3500XL Software (C3500XL-C3H2S-M), Version 12.0(5)WC11, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

Example of CatOS (output of show ver):

WS-C6506 Software, Version NmpSW: 8.2(2)

NMP S/W compiled on Apr 7 2004, 11:54:05

Hi Friend,

The most simple way is just run a command "enable"

if you see a prompt

"Switch> (enable)"

you are 100% running CATOS but if you see a prompt like

"switch#"

You are 100% running IOS.

Ok great. I just got confused. With all the different versions of IOS and the the command sets can be diffent. I was thinking it was I differnce in the OS itself and did not relate to the versions of code I am using. thanks for your help.
