Hi all,
i'm changing some N2K fex with brand new N9K for mgmt part.I noticed that the N9K where fex are connected has a strange connection, basically his mgmt port is connected to one of his fex N2K.
So,we decided to move layer 3 directly to N9K mgmt switch from his directly connected WS-C6509.My idea is just moving vlan 100 at layer 3 , but any idea about better way to do it?(please see diagram)
Thanks in advance,
MMGG

Hello,
you want to move the layer 3 interface for the management Vlan from the 6509 to the N9K, is that right ? I am not really clear on what problem you are trying to solve...

Hi Georg, thanks for your reply.Yes,i want to do exactly that. My doubt is that N9K at the moment is just switch,no routing,no routing protocols,no bgp,etc..so i'd like to know which will the best way to do that migration.
TIA,

Hello,
sorry for asking stupid questions, but in your current topology (the one depicted in your drawing) you cannot reach the management interface of the N9K ? Either way, since you only have one link, you might as well just enable 'ip routing' on the N9K, configure the Vlan 100 interface, and then use static routing.
What is the 6509 currently used for (I assume it does all the inter-Vlan routing) ?

HI Georg,N9K mgmt interface can be reached.
Ip routing is already enabled on N9K and static routing to 10.10.0.1 as well and vlan 100 already declared on N9K.What i need is moving vlan100 with his ip address from 6509 to N9K,basically.And yes,6509 is used for inter-vlan routing and for bgp neighbourship.
TIA,

Nexus 9K you can have MGMT outofband and inband - depends on requirement, most of the setup they have out of band setup that is seperate from the Data network, so easy to managed by network admin
inn your case as per the diagram you do not have that setup, so better use in-band management and remove that link connected to FEX. (since there no value there, if that FEX go down your management also go down.
if nexus doing new setup just layer to then add VLAN 100 interface and route that works (remove VRF config and shutdown MGMT port)

HI Balaji,thanks for your adivise.
So ,basically, what you mean,is using an interface as mgmt inbound, delete vlan 100 ip addressing on cisco6509,configure vlan 100 with ip address on N9K and configure a static route to 6509?Is that right?
TIA,
MMGG

Sure that should work, that is what your Migration plan also right, if this is VLAN you using SSH to connect - make sure you have local console access to connect - if you also need to access old Cisco Catalyst, take one of the IP from VLAN 100 and configure to access that devices.
