I have a Catalyst 2950 switch that I have been trying to console into to fiddle around. But when I plug the console cable in, it reads "USB Serial Controller D" in my Device Manager and does not mention a COMM port. The cable is a Cisco L97744 RJ45 to serial that is connected to a serial to usb adapter. I have tried looking for drivers and have installed a few but they don't seem to work. Any help is appreciated .

The driver was the issue. For such an old cable, I had to find a driver from driverscape for rs32 to usb. https://www.driverscape.com/download/tripp-lite-usb-to-serial-port
Updated the usb devices driver manually by selecting this folder.

what Windows OS ? I think my Console does not need any drivers on Win 7 but maybe newer Win OS needs special permission (in addition to drivers). Is USB adapter OK? are all cables new ? Look in Device Manager pane under COMM ports for comm port; open it and set it up *( I think is 8bits, 1,N,1)

I am using an Asus Tuf F17 laptop running Windows 10. The adapter and cable are older. I received a few switches and routers for free and was just was wanting to mess about with them. There was no COM section in device manager so I attempted to install the Cisco serial legacy hardware. That did not end up working either.
