UCS 220M3 ESXi and RAID

Dear Folks,

I have a confusion in one of my deployments. My client ordered initially a UCS 220M3 server, which came along with a windows CD. It was supposed to be used as an LMS 4.1 server. Later on there were some variation and customer wants to have prime infrastructure over it. Now I am unable to understand how to do it. The server which came doesnt have any OS. It has one 600 GB hard drive. I have following issues now...i am a bit confused as i am new to the UCS.

1. Through the CIMC i canot see any physical HDD installed. I went to the LSI software raid controller through the startup using ctrl+M. I made a RAID0 selecting the HDD and it shows the RAID has been configured and there is one virtual drive in the system. When the system boots i can see that the drive is online but When i access the CIMC and nevigate to the storage ->storage cards->controller info I see virtual drive count = 0 and physical drive count = 0

2. On the same page, i see "controller status: Not present" and the "internal status: initializing".

3. When i nevigate to the storage->storage cards->physcial drive info, i see flexflash = missing

4. when i run the Vmware ESXi setup from cisco dvd bootup, the vmware is unable to see any virtual drive to get installed on.

I am attaching snaps of all the problems mentioned above. I seriously need some quick help on this as the project is getting delayed.

Have you had a look at the "RAID Controller Considerations" in the UCS C22 Server and Installation Guide? (link)

It states that "VMware ESX/ESXi or any other virtualized environments are not supported for use with the embedded MegaRAID controller."

I'm not a UCS specialist but it seems that server with the internal RAID controller-managed hard drive as you currently have it delivered  is not designed for use with VMware. It would need to load and run ESX from a different HDD system (i.e. with a supported type of RAID controller as specified in the UCS C-series Server VMware Installation Guide).

I ever experience same your problem. You must install external RAID card(Mezzanine Cards)

because UCS C220M3 not support Embedded RAID controller.
