ASA 5505 licence issue

Hi,

I'm currently facing a problem with a ASA5505 and It's drivin me nuts !!!

I thing I've set it up from factory defaults...

From the CLI, I can ping an the outside interface, the GW and an outside IP (ex:8.8.8.8).

So I believe that there's no connectivity issue and the configuration is correct.

However, for a reason that I don't know, users can't have access to web pages.

The product license allow me to have 50 host connected. Currently I've only got one host connected...

When I enable syslog, I can see the following messages :

Deny traffic for protocol 17 src inside: 192.168.1.20/64429 dot ouside:8.8.4.4/53, licensed host limit of 0 exceeded.

Where this limitation can come from ??

Have you any Idea ??

So as expected, the ASA has a default route from the DHCP server.

Can you try to add the default route Statictly? As you have some modem/router in front of the ASA then there should be no problem to configure the static default route. You might actually might want to change the "outside" interface configuration to manual/static instead of DHCP if thats possible

You can for example do so that

  • Use "ping 192.168.1.100" from the ASA
  • Use "show arp | inc outside" to confirm that there is no ARP marking for the above IP address
  • If there is no ARP marking for the IP address do the following

interface Vlan2

nameif outside

security-level 0

ip address 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0

route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1

And then see the "show local-host" output and test traffic through the ASA.

Naturally the problem you are facing should be something that shouldnt happen. I merely try to suggest something that might work instead

Hi,

Can you for example do so that you save the ASA configuration and then reboot both the ASA and the Internet modem/router.

You seem to have the very latest version of the software in the 8.4 series. If you have access to the Cisco Site download section. I guess you could try something like 8.4(5). (I use it on my ASA5505 here at home) Just incase it somekind of bug.

I cant see this being a configuration issue anymore even after statictly configured ASA interfaces. And I cant make out any problem with your ASA configurations.

Also, remember to add "fixup protocol icmp" so the ASA knows have to automatically allow ICMP Echo replys through the ASA. If the above command (ICMP inspection) is not configure and no ACL allows Echo Replys on the "outside" interface then ICMP from behind the ASA to the Internet wont work.

It seems the problem is somehow related to the default route and DHCP on the "outside" interface

Can you take the output of the "show route" and see if you can see any default route?

If there is no default route maybe there is some problem with the ISP configurations.

Ah,

Actually as you said, yoi can ping to the Internet from the ASA so there should be a default route active.

Can you perhaps see what the default route is and configure it staticly to the ASA and see if this makes any difference to the "show local-host" message ouput and naturally see if the connection work at all.

I have never run into this kind of problem myself.

But it seems to have to do something with the ASA not being able to determine what the "outside" interface is so the ASA can correctly apply the 50 user limit of the license.

The default route links directely the ASA to my WAN router.

Adding a static route doesn't change anything...

It's really weird...

So as expected, the ASA has a default route from the DHCP server.

The modification had no impact on the internet connectivity.

The outputs of the commands are the ones expected.

I've just tried to upgrade the software 9.0.2 ED and now it works just fine... This is really wird... Don't know what was goin on...

Sounds somekind of bug to me.

Probably the best course of action at this point would be to open a TAC case with Cisco.

I couldnt find any Bug ID yet that would match to this kind of situation/behaviour.

Good though that you were able to get it working with the other software. I havent personally used 8.4(6) yet. Might just test it at some point and see if I have the same problem with my ASA.

Hi Jouni,

same problem here with 8.4(6) on ASA5505 with 50 Inside Hosts licensed. Going back to 8.4(5) and the problem "licensed host limit of 0 exceeded" doesn't occur anymore. Seems to be a new bug 8.4(6), not the only one so far.... :-(
