ASA5505 Opening Ports

gmcclana
Level 1
Level 1

I have attempted to open three ports on our firewall.  Only when I test the ports using an open port checker tool online, I get a response that the ports are closed.  I'm not understanding why these ports are not getting hits or showing open.  Can someone please tell me what I am missing?

My current configuration is as follows:

Hi,

You can check whether the ports are open or not by using packet tracer on the ASA and also test by passing traffic on these three ports.

Regards,

Aditya

Please rate helpful posts and mark correct answers.

Thank you for that suggestion.  I have been testing the ports using an external port checker website.  They are coming back closed.  I'm asking if there is something in this configuration that  I am missing or over looking.

Are the ports actually listening on the server?

If it's actually specifying CLOSED, then this could suggest you got an actual response such as a TCP reset.

FILTERED would be different

What happens when you try to telnet to the public IP on these ports?

I'd also add to test with Packet Tracer, it's a quick test and will point you in the right direction

Yes, David, they are listening on the server.  If I bypass the firewall the server replies to the ports.  If I telnet to the public IP using these ports the session times out.

So, I believe after looking at this more that the problem is within these command lines:

Peter,

Thanks for that suggestion.  I ran the command while a connection attempt was being made and didn't see any hits from the IP address or that port number.

Also, if I remove the firewall from the network, the ports work.  I know that sounds like a "duh" statement, but I was verifying that the server wasn't the cause of the blocking.

Looking at your configuration, it looks as though the "outside" access list has not been applied on the access-group section.  To add this, please issue "access-group outside in interface outside" in global configuration mode.

If this was left off intentionally, I would recommend at looking at your NAT's.  Remember that on the IOS version you are running, in access lists you should specify the NAT IP rather than the real IP.

Simrid,  I have changed the configuration slightly from what is posted here in an attempt to simplify the configuration.  I did try applying the change you suggested with the outside_access_in list.  It still does not work.  Also, here is the part of the config that has changed.

It sounds as though it's an issue on the NAT's of your ACL's.  To simulate this, please could you try and perform a packet-tracer through your firewall and let me know the output?  Here's some information on the packet-tracer command if you are unfamiliar:

 http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/asa/asa-command-reference/I-R/cmdref2/p1.html

I would imagine it will fail on the RPF check.  Let me know the outcome - The syntax would be something like

"packet-trace input outside tcp x.x.x.x src_prt 192.168.1.3 dst_prt"

Here is the result:

Interesting, have you got the access-group applied?  I can't see the configuration in the new up to date configuration you sent.

"show run access-group"

Apparently not.  I get a command prompt when I run the command.  Here is the complete configuration:
