FMC - Monitor this interface for failures

We have a pair of Firepower 4110s configured as HA. Under the High Availability tab, we have a mixture of some interfaces having both "Monitor this interface for failures" selected and a Standby IP Address entered. On other interfaces, we only have "Monitor this interface for failures" without a Standby IP Address. In both cases, we have both active and standby MAC addresses entered. I'm having difficulty tracking down whether or not a standby IP address is needed, or if the MAC addresses alone are adequate. Can anyone help with this? Thanks
