Hi,
For upgrading PIX OS version 8.0(4) software. Requires a minimum of 16 MB Flash and 64 MB RAM.
pls have a look into the following URL's may be it help you to upgrade the IOS in PIX,
Based on my experience my suggesion is don't upgrade the PIX IOS to 8.04,if you are using IPsec VPN on the pix appliance. There is some some bug on 8.04
You can upgrade the ASDM "asdm-523.bin" which is stable version for your existing IOS

Maybe 8.02 or 8.03 we better then? If so what's the best method to update the ASDM and firmware as I haven't done this before.

You can TFTP or use your existing ASDM to transfer the files to flash. You will probably have to make room by deleting your existing OS for your upgrade. don't forget to update your OS and ASDM boot strings. Here's the release notes that should also help. Good luck!
