Website reports I'm Not Using OpenDNS

Hi,

When I run ipconfig /all it shows my computer is using OpenDNS but the OpenDNS website test shows that my computer is NOT using OpenDNS.

I have restarted my router and my computer.

Is there something else I should do?

Thanks,

-P-

To answer your question, I would need to see the complete plain text output of the following diagnostic commands:

nslookup -type=txt debug.opendns.com.
nslookup whoami.akamai.net.

Same problem (did you really run ipconfig/all and it shows your computer using OpenDNS), same diagnostic questions.

Here's a suggestion.

If you find that you cannot run the command:

nslookup -type=txt debug.opendns.com.

(that was provided by rotblitz) try checking to see if you have IPv6 enabled.

If it is enabled, try disabling it and see if that fixes the problem.

@mulangi

What makes you think that the mentioned command cannot be run with IPv6 enabled?  It can!

Also, disabling IPv6 may fix one problem but creates other problems, e.g. not being able to reach IPv6-only destinations.  Better you configure your IPv6 side to work with OpenDNS.

Not sure why you didn't post the command outputs, so I could advise further what your problem is.

Didn't you read my message, or what is the reason you don't follow it?  What shall we do with your comment?  Why did you comment at all?

Hi rotblitz,

I have just attempted to run the nslookup commands as you requested.

I did so with iPV6 enabled and this is the output:

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.192]
(c) 2017 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\WINDOWS\system32>cd ,,
C:\WINDOWS\system32

C:\WINDOWS\system32>cd..

C:\Windows>nslookup -type=txt debug.opendns.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: fe80::1a62:2cff:fe93:3130

*** UnKnown can't find debug.opendns.com: Non-existent domain

C:\Windows>
C:\Windows>nslookup whoami.akamai.net.
Server: UnKnown
Address: fe80::1a62:2cff:fe93:3130

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: whoami.akamai.net
Address: 80.10.203.19

C:\Windows>

Thanks,

Hi rotblitz,

FYI

If I run nslookup with no parameters, and with iPV6 enabled, I get this output:

C:\Windows>nslookup
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: fe80::1a62:2cff:fe93:3130

Great, I see now.  You currently use your ISP's DNS service with IPv6 enabled.  To use OpenDNS, you missed to configure the DNSv6 resolver addresses ::ffff:d043:dedc and ::ffff:d043:dcde either on the DNS server or router behind fe80::1a62:2cff:fe93:3130 or in the IPv6 properties of the computer's network interface.

Hi rotblitz,

Very Strange.

Earlier today, BEFORE my message at 14:59 I wrote an apologetic message to you after reading your message timed at 13:21 because I thought I'd offended you. I searched the thread and I don't see it. so...

 - either I failed to hit the submit button AGAIN, or

 - someone deleted my message.

Anyway, I followed your instructions and eventually got the green check mark from the OpenDNS site, WITH IPv6 running. Phew!

I'd be happy to explain why I say "eventually" if you are interested. (it involved a VPN which reported that it was "off")

Thanks for your help

PS All this software stuff is a mystery to me,

I'm a VERY old H/W engineer who trained before electronic systems had ANY software - can you believe that?)

"Earlier today, BEFORE my message at 14:59 I wrote an apologetic message to you"

Sometimes messages go into "pending approval" status, waiting for a moderator (staff) to approve, apparently an anti-spam measure.  Whatever, you should still see it if you are logged in here.

"eventually got the green check mark from the OpenDNS site, WITH IPv6 running. Phew!"

Great to hear!  This is what I expected to happen.

"I'm a VERY old H/W engineer who trained before electronic systems had ANY software - can you believe that?"

Sure, I can.  I'm also a rather old guy but early went into software and programming, since some 35 years.
