Hi all
Where can I get chapter and verse on compatibility between SFPs, Modules and Switches?
In the 24 port 3850 core switch at my company, I have a 10Gb network module C3850-NM-2-10G with 2 x 10Gb GBics filling ports 3 and 4 (see attached pic).
I have received from another site a 48 port 3850 switch with a C3850-NM-4-1G network module.
Plugged into port G1 on this is a GLC-SX-MMD 10-2626-01 GBic.
So the question is…..
Can I simply buy another GBic GLC-SX-MMD 10-2626-01 and plug that into port 1 in the core switch and connect the two?
My concern is over any compatibility issues between the network modules, speeds etc.
Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil,
The TMG compatibility matrix tool shows that both the C3850-NM-2-10G and C3850-NM-4-1G support the 1Gb GLC-SX-MMD transceiver.
So yes you can connect the 2 modules C3850-NM-2-10G with C3850-NM-4-1G using a GLC-SX-MMD on each end if this is your plan. This will be a 1 Gb speed connection though.

Fabrizio

First of all you forgot to add the attachment.
Modules is not an issue, but you need to have same SFP Modules both the side to establish connection.
Make sure you check module have that compatible SFP support.

Hi Phil,
There is a very cool tool for check cross compatibility between modules:
https://tmgmatrix.cisco.com/home
As you can see from the screenshot you can add several modules to it and you can export to file too!!
Hope this help.

Hi Fabrizio
I have input the SFP module and the two different speed network modules and they both appear in a resulting table.
Does the fact that the combinations exist in this table indicate compatibility?
Thanks
Phil

Couple quick points:
The GLC-SX-MMD is the same as the GLC-SX-MM and the D is unnecessary unless you know you need it. ;-)
SFP-10G-SR is the SFP for 10Gig and they are not that expensive! (CablesAndKits has them, or you can find them on eBay, etc)
Actually, I just looked and as of right now they are on sale: https://www.cablesandkits.com/mc/transceiver-modules/cisco-sfp-10g-sr/fam-5/compatibility=CiscoOriginal/displaycondition=Refurbished/
The 2-10G card you have has four ports. The TWO RIGHT ports are 10 Gig ports that will drop down to 1 Gig if you have the GLC-SX-MM (or D) installed. The two LEFT ports are 1 Gig only.
So, not that you asked, but I can't help but to mention, that if you swap those SFP's and stick them in the center (and make sure you have an OM3 multimode duplex fiber cable) you will be cooking at 10 Gig.
Happy networking!
