ATA 186 RJ11 line port convert to UK phone socket

I've got a couple of questions relating to this issue. Essentially as we are UK based, we cannot directly connect some of our analogue equipment to the phone socket on the back of an ATA 186 (becuase the ATA equipment has RJ11 sockets and we have UK plugs).

I connected an analogue handset using a UK to US phone adaptor (the type youd get from dixons). I could make calls on this fine, but the phone would not generate a ring tone (as in, if you called it, it would not ring out loud). I wondered whether the pinouts/wiring etc. in this adaptor did not support the ring generation. As this didn't work I replaced the RJ-11 (handset side) to IDC (wall socket side) cable with a RJ-11 to RJ-11 cable that works with a modem. With this, I could not even get a dialtone.

Looking at the RJ-11 to RJ-11 cables, I notice there are 2,4 or 6 wire all available straight or crossover.

Essentially I want the cheapest, most reliable, consistent approach for connecting various devices to an ATA phone port. What should I be looking at ?

Hi

I've not done this for over a year, but I remember struggling quite a lot with it - I'd assumed that since there were only four ports a little trial and error would get me results...

Eventually got to where you were with a working phone that wouldn't ring, and found that if I put one of these adapters that we used for patching phones through RJ45 cabling in the wall to our PBX it started working...

Here's a link to a thread with some resources referenced which should help you:

Have fun :-)

I think what I'm going to do, is use the following where ever I can :

"Telephone Adapter - An adapter to enable a standard UK phone to be connected to an American standard socket or a networking point. With ring circuit which enables the phone to ring."
