We have a callmanager 4.1 and want to know how to configure distinctive rings for phones through callmanager. Can that be done? If so, can it be done in bulk?

There is a disctinctiverings xml file in TFTP directory on callmanager that can be modify to include new rings to modify the menu presented to the users. The ring files need to also be placed in the TFTP folder. The rings are available to all users, you cannot restrict certain users from seeing them.

Does this .XML file allow the user to have different rings based on caller ID? Or is it based on the line appearance?

For the first line, the phone uses Ringlist.xml and for the remaining lines the phone uses DistinctiveRingList.xml.
So you can edit the contents of those two files to change the files that the users can select.
You can not assign different ring tone for based on any call criteria, you set one for each line and that's it.

The pcm file requirements are as follows
The PCM files for the rings must meet the following requirements for proper playback on Cisco IP Phones:
Raw PCM (no header)
8000 samples per second
8 bits per sample
uLaw compression
Maximum ring size16080 samples
Minimum ring size240 samples
Number of samples in the ring is evenly divisible by 240.
Ring starts and ends at the zero crossing.
To create PCM files for custom phone rings, you can use any standard audio editing packages that support these file format requirements.
The XML looks something like this...

James
