I have the ATA186-L1. According to the manual I should be able to configure it through its IP address. I type in http://<ip adress>/dev

The page will not come up. I did try http://<ip adress>/reset. That came up with "ok." and a blue screen.

I have even tried the voice prompt reset, still i cannot access the web setup page.

The software is version 2.16.

Do you have IP service currently with vonage.com? Vonage.com locks their ATA devices and can not be unlocked by users. It can only beunlocked by vonage.com.

I did have service with Vonage.

They never asked for it back.

So I would say it belongs to me now.

I am sure there is a way to unlock the device?

I had the same problem with my ATA 186. Vonage.com does not unlock the ATA adapter unless you pay $15.00. After paying $15.00, they do unlock the ATA adapter. This iswhat happened to me. It is a very very stupid thing that vonage does.

I don't think they have the right to hold a piece of equipment I own hostage.

Surely someone has knowledge on bypassing this?

Have you read the terms of service at http://www.vonage.com/features_terms_service.php ? It specifically talks about resetting the device or tampering with their copyrighted firmware.

I suspect the devices are configured using TFTP provisioning with the tftp url pointing to a Vonage address. You might be able to redirect this to a TFTP server of your choosing and download a new config.

The surefire way of fixing this is to pull out the eeprom and reprogram it. I had a unit that got killed when the power dropped during a firmware upgrade. I opened a working unit and used an eprom burner to copy its eeprom over to the dead unit. I'm not sure of the legality of redistributing Cisco's firmware. If you can download the image from Cisco, I see no issue with getting someone to email you the eeprom version.
