CME 3.2: unknown number logged for missed calls

I can see the correct calling party number on the display of my 7940G. But if calls are not answered, under 'missed calls' i see only "unknown number from external call" records. Why is the number not logged?

We have a 1760-V with 12.3(11)T3 and using a single BRI interface (VIC-2BRI-NT/TE) to connect to the PSTN.

I don't think it's a problem with the IP phone at your end. It's more to do with telco. You need to get in touch with telco to resolve the issue.
