I'm getting this error now and again on the Cisco 7960 phones we just recently installed here. It prevents the phone from sending or receiving calls, and seems to have no basis in the configuration of the individual phone.
Does anyone know common causes of this error, and any potential solutions?

You can enable the timeout on your gateway if your using a dsp-farm, if not, you can increase on ccm services. I would look to see what is the root of the problem before tweeking the timeout values.

I agree with Todd, find the issue before tweaking anything. Also, I did find the following bug, you might check you phone load to see if it applies:
CSCdw76866
Symptom :
"DSP Keepalive Timeout" display on the phone.
Condition :
On an inbound or outbound call, right before the voice-cut through, IP phone
might
show the above message on the phone.
When the message is displayed, NO AUDIO is observed.
Changing from speakermode to handset mode has no effect.
Workaround :
Upgrade the phone load to P00303020200 or later
Upgrade to phone load P00303010400 or later
