Headsets for 7960s and echo

We're trying to get headsets to work with the 7960s and are using some Plantronics H81 headsets - for PSTN calls they work great. But when calls stay within our network (either VoIP-VoIP or VoIP-LegacyPBX calls we get severe self-echo (each party hears themselves on an echo). THis happens even if only one end has the headset on - and again only on low-cost routes that don't hit the PSTN.

Is this a gain/hot line/decibel issue - might the headsets need to be fancier to adjust for some differences in calling internally or externally?

What headsets (part numbers if possible :-) are you all useing successfully with the phones - and do you use external amps/mixers/gain adjuster boxes or just plug into the phone? (Ours are just plugged into the phone).

We experience echo when the headsets' volume is too high on the cisco phone. Turning the volume down on the headset works, but sometimes to get rid of the echo, we have to take our volume down below "listenable" levels.
