IM and meetings w/out UC?

Hi all,

I'm trying to understand the various IM and video/meeting applications available to a customer without a UC deployment.  Is it limited to Jabber and Webex Connect?  If so, what are the major differences and the limitations of these?  Thanks.

Within the realm of Cisco products your options are:

  • WebEx Connect with Jabber for Windows/Mac/Android/iOS/Blackberry. WebEx Connect is the SaaS offering while Jabber is the client application. This is a purely cloud-based IM&P platform that does not require an on-premise UC investment.
  • Cisco Unified Communications Manager IM & Presence (CUCM-IM&P). This is an on-premise version of the server software but uses the same Jabber client applications. Note that this utilizes UC Manager for user management but does not otherwise require a UC environment; there are IM&P-only deployment models and SKUs.
  • You can use WebEx Meetings with HD video when it comes to conferencing.
  • The Cisco CallWay SaaS offering will support Cisco Jabber Video clients as well as TelePresence endpoints for video conferencing.

Great info, thank you for your help.

One more question on the first option you mentioned, as that sounds like the direction we're more interested in.

Is jabber a separate component of webex connect? How do those two work together?
