In order to have Cisco IP SoftPhone control a physical IP phone, you need to create a user in the global directory and associate that user with the physical IP phone.
Also under the user configuration click on "Softphone" under application profiles and then add the IP address of the PC that will be used to control the hardphone in the field called "associated pc".
Then login with this user when you access Softphone the first time and you should be able to control your Cisco IP "hard" phone.
You do NOT need to create a CTI port in this case.
