Hi,
We recently bought 2 N5K and 4 N2K Fabric extenders, now we are having problem installing the fabric extenders as the FEX just wont go up.

I am seeing "image mismatch" definitely because our N5K is pre-installed with 5.0(3) while fex is using 4.2(1) pre-installed.
Is upgrading the N2K possible? Hope someone can help
Thanks,
Ramon

The N5K should upgrade the FEX when it is connected the first time. This pocess can take really long time the first time.
Please post your N5K config.

jerry

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for the reply.
Attached is the running-config for one of the N5K connected to 2 Fabric Extender with fex 100 and fex 101.
We have the N5K running for over 24HR and still the fex doesn't come up.
switch# sh int po3 fex-intf

The problem is persistent, the N5K cannot upgrade the N2K's.
Thanks & Regards,
Ramon

Okay, I've reviewed the config and everything looks fine. There in one thing I want you to try before contact TAC:
1. Re-run the install all command -
install all system bootflash:n5000-uk9.5.0.3.N2.1.bin kickstart bootflash:n5000-uk9-kickstart.5.0.3.N2.1.bin
If you want, you can use the latest 5.0.3.N2.2 instead, this should reload the N5K and re-initiate the download process to the FEX. Also, I don't believe this is a cabling issue since both FEXs have the same behavior. If you want, you can try to swap cable to see if it improves or not.

jerry

Dear Jerry,
I tried to do install all command using the pre-installed NX-OS and it is still having the same issues.
I also tried using the latest OS and still no difference.

Hi All,
I am still having the problem with the N5K and N2K. While waiting for TAC, I want to try to connect the N2K to our N7K distribution switch to ugrade the Fex OS to 5.x
My question is if I connect the N2K to the N7K with version 5.1(3) will it have a problem if we connect it back to N5K with version 5.0(3) or will it be able to downgrade so we can use it in the N5K.
Really appreciate if someone can confirm if this workaround will work.
Thanks,
Ramon

Hi All,
Using the N7K to install the Nexus 2000 yielded the same result as connecting to our N5K.

Hi All,
We have resolved the issue regarding the above problem. We found out that the structured cabling was using SMF pigtails on the FO patch panels. That is why we are have the flap error disabled.
We ended up removing the N5K and N2K and connect them with MMF patch cords. Now the N2K is working with the FEX.
Thanks for the support here really appreciated.
Regards,
Ramon

Hi All,
We had the same problem, replacing the cable and jack in and jack out of the Module solved the issue.

Ranjit
