We have a number of Cisco 2950 48 ports switches and have discovered that they have lost the configuration for no apparent reason. Has anyone come across the same problem?

If you did a write mem there should be no way it would lose it's config unless for some reason you have a bunch of them where the config register settings are incorrect .

Each time you do a config change, do a "copy run start" or a "write mem". (The first of these is preferable; the write mem is an older version of the command.)
Check the config register (command is "show vers") on the boxes that lose their config: it should be something like 0xF. If it is 0x4F, then the box has been set to ignore the save configuration whenever it boots.
