Cisco Works Hardware Requirements/Recomendations

We are looking at Running Cisco Works Lan Management, WAN Management, Security Management, and IP Telephony Management Bundles. Can all of these parts of Cisco Works run on One big server or would we need 2, 3 or 4 separate servers to run all these parts of Cisco Works? Also what hardware (processors, memory and Hard drive space) would you recomend?

You will get the ole “it depends” answer.

We run all acceptably on one server but it is a good server.

You cant get by with marginal hardware – pay the price! We have pushed the boundaries and when I interface with the TAC they are always amazed at what is running on one server. The ole “it depends” answer will depend on number of nodes, size of the installation and some very un-quantifiable guesses.

Again, I would recommend two servers and going for the top end hardware

Hope this is a little help (you can always get your Cisco rep to do a recommendation)

Here's a Deployment Guide for LMS:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/wr2k/lnmn/prodlit/cwsdg_dg.htm

And a White Paper as well:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/wr2k/prodlit/ckspp_wp.htm

This should help answer your question.

As for IP Telephony bundle, do not install it on the same server with LMS/RWAN or other CW2K apps or on a system running any other third-party management software (such as HP OpenView or NetView). This is documented in the Install Guide.

I have 3 cw servers dual 1.4 p3 1.5gb ram and 108 gb disk. I manage 135 devices and two pixes. This was the third upgrade to get any type of reasonable performance. My suggestion is throw as much money at the hardware as you can. You must exceede the suggested configuration. I run cw foundation and rme on a pair servers. The pixes log to one of them only and the rest of the campus is managed by the other. The pix logs can really eat up disk and cw foundation and campus manger on one by itself. We are much happier the single server not work.

Hope this helps.
