I'm trying to use IE 6.0 to connect to my Ciscoworks 2000 but without succes. Does anyone know if there is any patch or update available from Cisco so that IE 6.0 can be used ?

Only the latest version of CW2000 (CD-ne 5th Edition) bundle supports IE 6.0. Make sure that you're using the correct version of Java Plug-in 1.3.1

While it may not be supported with earlier version, IE 6.0 worked for us with the 4th Edition. However, you do need to make sure that your IE has the JVM (Java Virtual Machine) installed on it. This is seperate from the Java Plug-In and for a while Microsoft was making you download the JVM seperately from the browser.

The current Java Plug-in (1.3.1_04) works fine in XP with IE6.0, however Ciscoworks still expects to find JVM and forwards the user to Microsoft's web site, where we're notified we can no longer download JVM. The question is, where do we get the JVM so we can access CW2K?

CW2000 does not support Java Plug-In 1.3.1_04. It will only work with 1.3.1 which will be automatically downloaded and install for 5th Edition the very first time you login. As for JVM, you can get it from any free ware sites like www.download.com etc

cw2000 with ie6 running ok here...

...but: It's a pain in the neck that you need to cancel the Java 1.3.1 installation each time before login.

Java 1.3.x installed once.

If you do Windows Update from MS Web for your IE6, you would get Authentication Required during ciscoworks 2000 login failure and can not connect to ciscoworks. Technical and political issue among these guys. Wish some one could help us out.

If your client IE with whatever version of Java is working, you can try skipping the Java version check by going directly to the login page using this URL:

http://:1741/login.html

Hi Mushtaq,

I am quite happy with the JRE v1.3.1 requirement but the MS JVM requirement for IE6 is more difficult.

According to the release notes of LMS 2.2 the required JVM is 5.1.3186, however it seems impossible to obtain it.

As per the MS site http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/

MS will no longer ship Java technology as of Jan'04 and are advising customers to migrate.

The latest downloadable JVM is 5.0.0.3810 which is OK for IE 5.0/5.5 but not IE6.

As Cisco stipulate this as a requirement for use of LMS 2.2, where can we obtain it ?

As you suggested previously I have tried www.download.com or other freeware sites but failed to come up with anything.

As far as I can tell you can't download MS JVM anywhere. Ultimately the burden is on Cisco to fix this since they decided to jump into bed with Microsoft. It's really frustrating seeing the results of partnering in this way with a company that uses so many non-standard components in their software as Microsoft.

I just ran into the JVM issue installing CW on Windows 2000 server with IE 5.5. From what I could find, the bottom line is if you don't have it already, you're buggered. W2K Server with Service Pack 4 (on CD) doesn't include it, so you have to find an older W2K install with older or no service packs and do the patches. MS JVM is included in the browser with older installs and the downloadable service packs (luckily) don't overwrite or remove them. Unfortunately this doesn't add any value to what to do with IE6.

Back in the day using X on Solaris to run Traffic Director, CiscoView, and the like was so much simpler than the brave new multi-flavored Java world... One can only hope momentum for Linux continues to build so we don't have to rely on these headaches from Microsoft.
