Connectivity between 6509 & 4507 (native IOS)

Hello ,

This Q drives me so crazy. We have 6509 (Hybrid OS ) , acts as VTP domain. This 6509 will have a connectivity with another NW having 4507 (sup IV) through Trunk port & Ether Channel .I don't want create one more VTP domain . I have made 4507 as VTP client and whatever Vlan creation will be done in 6509 only . My Q is , when I create vlan (say Vlan 10 ) on 6509 , for corresponding Vlan (Vlan 10) , Can I assign IP address (say 192.168.10.1) on Virtual Interface on 4507 side (int vlan 2) instead of on 6509 MSFC side sothat I can limit the Routing within 4507 .

Thanks

Raju

Raju,

You can definitely do that.

Make sure that Vlan10 is populated at L2 level in 4507. From 6509 point of view, it will sit at the top of the spanning-tree for Vlan10. But not necessarily be the default-gateway for that vlan. It can be 4507 or any other switch with routing capability. Ports configured for Vlan10 in 6509 will also go have 4507 as their default-gateway !

Rgds,

Vijay V

Thanks Vijay.

The Trunk will be enabled between 6509 & 4507 and 4507 is configured as VTP client sothat all the Vlan's will get populated to 4507 from 6509. I will enable pruning for this trunk at later stage to limit some unnecessary Vlan's passing to another NW (4507). My objective is , users connected with 4507 will use 4507 as default gateway for Routing and traffic between 4507 & 6509 should be layer-2 only rather than users come all the way to 6509 for Routing .I'll create a separate Vlan for IP routing between 4507 NW & 6509 NW with static Route.

Thanks

Quick question - Why do you intend to create a seprate vlan for routing between 4507 & 6509 ?

Rgrds

Both are different Networks like 192.168.0.0 & 10.0.0.0 . I need to have a one Vlan for IP routing between each other like 192.168.10.1 on one NW sie and other side 192.168.10.2 . This will be used for IP Routing .I don't want to use data Vlan for Routing between two Network's .

Thanks.
