DSL - Very basic question

Hello,

I am a newcomer to DSL technologies and this is my first post in this section.

My question. I know that DSL is often used as an access technology into the internet cloud. However, can any of the DSL technologies also work in a point to point architecture? What I mean here is that if I equip two 1720's, say, with DSL modules, can I order a service from a carrier that will allow me to connect those routers directly through that carrier without going through the internet? Then run PPP or something across the DSL link?

Much appreciate any URL's or guidance about this folks !!

Steve

Technically, it should be no problem. DSL accesses ATM technology, so a provider will need to provide a PVC through its network to connect your two locations, instead of from a location to their Internet router. However, I don't know if DSL providers sell this type of service. You'll have to ask some of your local providers if they will provide this service.

If your concern is security, I would recommend VPN through the internet cloud. That should also be considerably cheaper, unless you are talking of a Local Area.

Thanks for that guys !!
