frame-relay fragmentation

hi,

my question:

i have the task to implement voip over a 384 kb/s frame-relay link.

for that i configured frame-relay fragmentation wit 480 Bytes.

does cisco ios only fragment if there is a voice-call or is this fragmentation are active if there is only e.g. internetdownload (http).

i ask for the following reason:

if it is always active there must be a worser performance because of smaller frame-relay pakets and therefore more layer2 overhead.

Frame relay fragmentation is active whether or not there is a voice call active. Fragmentation has no way of knowing whether or not the packets are voice, it just distinguishes based on packet size.

There is more overhead with fragmentation because of the additional header, but for a 480-byte fragment, the overhead will be nominal.
