Does anyone know if it's possible to see the serial number for an 1841 router from the command line interface? I forgot to record the SN after installation at a client site.

sh ver

doesn't seem to do the trick.

Hi,

Its very hard to get the serial number from the CLI as this feature is not built into the IOS. However on some routers and IOS feature sets we can use " show diag " to see that serial number.

Try that on your router and see if that works out for you. If not, I am afraid buddy you ahve to walk down to the chassis and take it out from the back of it.

do a show ver

(look at Processor board ID) this is also chassis id.

see below

cisco 1841 (revision 5.0) with 118784K/12288K bytes of memory.

Processor board ID FTX0920Y00Z

2 FastEthernet interfaces

1 Virtual Private Network (VPN) Module

DRAM configuration is 64 bits wide with parity disabled.

191K bytes of NVRAM.

31360K bytes of ATA CompactFlash (Read/Write)do

also try a:

show inventory

The response by Amit reflects the traditional implementation of IOS in which you could not get the number.

The response by James is exactly correct and reflects a fairly new addition to IOS (for some platforms).

here is an example:

router1#sh inventory

NAME: "1841 chassis", DESCR: "1841 chassis, Hw Serial#: 1405257756, Hw Revision: 5.0"

PID: 1841 , VID: 5.0, SN: FTX0923W1SE

This seems to be a question, that a lot of people have been asking. Cisco has introduced the sh inventory command in newer IOSes, which help gather the actual serial number, unlike the sh version output which shows only the processor board serial number.

If you have a router platform/IOS, that doesnt support the sh inventory command, its advisable to preprogram the serial number by the following means (before shipping/installing the router on site)

a. snmp-server chassis-id

Poll the router using SNMP and you can gather the chassis-id information in your SNMP monitoring software.

b. int lo0

description

Put the serial number of the router as a description of a loopback interface.
