modem dial out issues

Hi

basically we are trying to setup an out of band managment connection to remote routers that have external us robotics modems connected. We are trying to dial out from a local 3640 router with an internal micra modem card. We can get the modem to dial out but it always fails due to incorrect settings on the modem. We are dialing out via a BRI isdn connection (remote routers are connected via PSTN) = When dialing with an external modem we use 9600/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS. Do we need to set this on the internal modem and if so how. AT commands do not seem to work - currently it is set as Cisco Mica V.90/K56FLEX/FAX/V.110

any ideas anyone.

debugging the modem we get :

Ideally with the default settings the MICA should be able to negotiate any modulation/speed advertised by the remote modem (USR in this case). We can also lock the MICA to connect at certain speeds using AT commands:

conf t

modemcap edit lock9600 misc &f&d2s29=0s30=9600DEBUGTHISMODEMs56=9600

line x y

modem autoconfigure type lock9600

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk801/tk36/technologies_tech_note09186a008009491b.shtml

• always use debug confmodem when first applying a new modemcap, in order to catch any typos

• on a box with many, many modems, first apply a new modemcap on a single idle line, to verify syntactical correctness. Then you can disable term mon and apply it to the rest

• a modemcap for integrated modems should always begin with a reset to factory defaults, &F

• on MICA, a modemcap should always begin with &F&D2

Thanks, Mak

Hi Mak

thank you for your reply - great help.

still having issues though. Basically it appears that we can now dial the connection to the remote modem but when we try to connect the connection is dropped:

00:08:14: Modem 3/0 Mica: configured for Originate mode, with Null signaling, 0x1 tone detection.

00:08:14: Modem 3/0 Mica: received dialstring 0033-----------

00:08:14: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state CALL_SETUP

00:08:18: Modem 3/0 Mica: Detected Dial tone

00:08:38: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state CONNECT

00:08:39: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state LINK

00:08:42: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state TRAINUP

00:08:44: %ISDN-6-CONNECT: Interface BRI1/0:1 is now connected to unknown

00:09:01: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state TERMINATING

00:09:01: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state IDLE

00:09:01: %ISDN-6-DISCONNECT: Interface BRI1/0:1 disconnected from unknown , call lasted 23 seconds

00:09:01: Modem 3/0 Mica: DISCONNECT after 00:00:23, due to reason (0x6007) AT mode command abort.

the modem appears to stay connected until we press return the the AT mode command abort appears in the debug and on the modem we get:

atdt 0033---------

(ABORTED)

NO CARRIER

if we do not type anything it eventually hangs up on its own after about 30 seconds with the following debug :

00:09:43: Modem 3/0 Mica: configured for Originate mode, with Null signaling, 0x1 tone detection.

00:09:43: Modem 3/0 Mica: received dialstring 0033-------------

00:09:43: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state CALL_SETUP

00:09:49: Modem 3/0 Mica: Detected Dial tone

00:09:58: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state CONNECT

00:09:59: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state LINK

00:10:01: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state TRAINUP

00:10:04: %ISDN-6-CONNECT: Interface BRI1/0:1 is now connected to unknown

00:10:27: %ISDN-6-DISCONNECT: Interface BRI1/0:1 disconnected from unknown , call lasted 29 seconds

00:10:27: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state TERMINATING

00:10:27: Modem 3/0 Mica: in modem state IDLE

00:10:27: Modem 3/0 Mica: DISCONNECT after 00:00:30, due to reason (0x7F06) DS1 network disconnect (no carrier).

it appears that the connection is ok but when trying to communicate between the two the connection will not allow it and drops the call

any ideas?

regards

Rob
