Hi,
I am building a lab for Cisco lab at my school.
I will need racks for putting 11 Cisco routers( 2500, 1760, 2600) and 3 switches(2950). Also for some servers (IBM x305). And ofcourse I will need some wire rack( the ladder) for running cable on the top.
Since I will have 11 different routers, any suggestion on how to share them such as by KVM switch(serial switch box?), so I can switch back and forth between them.
Thanks a bunch

Best bet (by that I mean cheapest) is go to Ebay and do a search for terminal server. Cisco makes a 2511 with 16 Async ports, but you can find a cheaper, dedicated terminal server.

Switching the asynchronous serial console ports might best be done using a simple $%45 patch bay. Scince the Ciscos use RJ45s for their RS232 consoles, I'd think that would be easiest, most reliable, cheapest, and it would be the most transparent (to the serial data that is).
Dave (who in previous days would have suggested a DevelSwitch, a fabulous asynchronous serial port switch that was used by many large networks)

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. But what does the $%45 patch bay look like. do you have any other name or brand for this so I can take a look.
Thanks

Of course I meant RJ45 patch bay. They look like a JPM800A from Black Box :)
Search on JPM800A at www.blackbox.com. They are made by companies like NORDX , Leviton, Hubbel, etc.

I think that you're searching a Console port Switch .
for do this , I designed a Electronically 8 port Serial Switch with universal electronic elements .
review this and get help from a computer hardware Architect or Electronic Architect about assemble this switching circuit .
assembling this board is almost cheap and easy to understand how it works .

I'm still searching for a business product to do that and more .

Check out www.blackbox.com or www.blackbox.co.uk.
SW542A - Serial port switch (8 or 16 ports) - Approx £645 or $1000. Looks pretty handy.

We use a Dominion sx32 made by raritan. It does a nice job and takes 32 serail devices. Now that the product has been out for a while the bugs have been worked out of it. www.raritan.com
