Re: Problem with IP phone on a Cisco 4006

I am currently trying to test using an IP phone with our new Mitel IP phone system. The phone itself is a Mitel 5220 and I am having trouble pulling a DHCP lease when plugged into a Cisco 4006 switch. When trying to pull a lease I get this error on the switch:

2005 Apr 27 18:11:58 %SYS-4-P2_WARN: 1/Tag 0 on packet from 08:00:0f:16:7e:e8 port 5/5, but port's native vlan is 98

VLAN 98 is the voice VLAN and the switch port the phone is in is on VLAN 98. But I only get that error on the switch, and on the phone it says “discovering DHCP” Now here’s the kicker, I took a Dell switch and plugged it into VLAN 98 and then plugged the phone into that Dell switch and voila, it pulls an address and works fine. The Dell switch was out of the box, with no config changes.

After seeing this, just as a test I turned trunking on, on the phone port. The above error went away, but of course I couldn’t pull an IP. The phone has a PC port on it as well so it sounds like to me that the LAN port on the phone is acting as an uplink or trunk port. ??

I am thinking there are some changes I need to make on the Cisco switch port that the phone is in, but I am unsure exactly what to do. Any guidance or help would be great.

Port 5/5 is where the IP phone is plugged in. The second command you wanted wasnt valid in my cli.

According to the 802.1Q/P standard a VLAN ID of 0 indicates no VLAN. So your Mitel phone does not do trunking, but does support QOS by setting 802.1P priority bits. Not sure if there is a way to configure the 4006 to handle this properly.

I have had this working on many occasions with Mitel phones. The issue usually is how you are informing the Phone of the Voice VLAN? Only Cisco IP Phones support Voice VLAN detection via CDP - even though the Mitel Phones run CDP they can't detect the Voice VLAN from it. I think in the VERY latest firmware they may be able to but I haven't worked on them for a few months.

What normally happens is the Phone will initially boot and use no 802.1q tagging. It will send a DHCP request and receive an offer of an IP address on the Access VLAN. The DHCP Server must be configured with the Mitel specific options to tell it what the VLAN tag is (I can't remember what this option is but this must be configured on the Access VLAN Scope and not the Voice VLAN scope). As long as this information is received the Phone with NAK the DHCP offer and start 'talking' using the now-discovered VLAN tag.

The Tag of 0 in the error message would normally indicate that the port has been configured as 'voice vlan dot1p' where the phone will write packets with an 802.1q tag of '0' but will set the 802.1p priority values.

Just an update, I got this working by doing the following.

*set primary vlan as the data vlan

set vlan

*set port to trunk and no negotiate

set trunk nonegotiate dot1q

*set auxiliary vlan to voice vlan

set port aux
