Protected Ports and PVLANs

Hi,

Is there a difference between using Protected Ports OR PVLANS, when they are relevant only to the Local Switch ?

Will protected ports (on the same switch) be able to communicate , if the traffic is routed through a layer 3 device ?

Does anyone know, when PVLAN feature will be available on 3550 series switches ?

Regards \\ Naman

The Protected Port feature is essentially a cut-down version of the PVLAN feature. If you read the documentation for PVLANs and Protected Ports you'll see what I mean. Protected Ports can't talk to other Protected Ports at layer-2, but can do so via a layer-3 device.

I'd be surprised if the 3550 series ever gets PVLAN functionality, as Cisco has restricted this feature to its mid and high-end switches thusfar.
