Root Port & Designated Port

Hi! What's the different between root port and designated port?

My understandings are :

Root port: non root brige switch's port that is connected directly to the root bridge.

I'm not very sure what designated port is. Designated Port : non root bridge switch that has the lowest root path cost to root brige + the only connection connecting 2 segments.

Pls correct me if that's wrong. Thks.

Think about it this way:

Each switch (or bridge) has one port that is the best path back to the root bridge. That is the root port.

On each segment, there is one port that is the best way off of the segment to get to the root bridge. That is the designated port.

Root port is the port on a non-root switch that is closest (in cost etc.) to the root switch.

Designated Port is selected per link or segment. It is responsible for sending out BPDUs. All ports on root connecting to other switches are Designated ports.
