Router config bug?

Hi,

I am trying to configure OSPF on a Cisco 1720.

When I enter the command 'router ospf 1' instead of entering router config mode, the CLI stays at global config mode and no error is being displayed. I cannot continue with OSPF.

The IOS is version 12.2(3d) and OSFP is supported on this platform.

Is this a bug in the specific version? Does anybody know about it.

Do you have any interfaces configured with ip addresses yet? You need IP on the router before ospf can be configured.

Yes, it is a production router and IP is configured.

Have you tried a different process ID, lets say 75 or 100? Ex:

EIGRP and RIP are working fine. BGP gives unknown protocol error.

enable the networks and run a debug ip ospf packets or events and see if any sort of ospf hellos are exchanged.

I guess you didn't get it correctly. I cann't enter router config mode, how am I supposed to debug ospf? The ospf process doesn't even start.

What is the name of the image you're running (not the version, but the name)??

I believe that in the low end platforms, OSPF is only supported in the "IP Plus" image. The name should be something like c1700-sy-..., instead of c1700-y-... for the plain "IP" image.

I don't think so. As the 1700 is not that low end. I have run successfully OSFP on 1600 series routers.

But this issue is getting quite interesting. Last night I rebooted the router and guess what? I was able to configure OSPF. But then show run stopped working.

I tried to enable buffered logging with 16384 KB but the router complained about not enough memory. 4096 was OK. (This sounds strange for a 16MB router). Anyways after doing this telnet stopped responding and now I cannot login to the router, even after 2 reboots.

Note that OSPF is running as a totally stubby area so memory consumption should be minimal.

It does sound like you have a memory problem, to me.... What happens when you run show run? Does it just do a show memory? Can you enable ospf and only put a single loopback in it, with no "real" interfaces, to see what it does then?
