Hi All,
trying to set the IP add on a Catalyst 2900 in ronmon and get the following error,
switch: IP_ADDRESS=192.168.0.1
Can't set variable with illegal char "x1b) in name.
What is wrong with this.?

See if you have an IOS in the flash by issuing "dir flash:" and if you do boot from it. If not recover the switch
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/corrupt_or_missing_image.html
These are the options available in switch: prompt
switch: help
? -- Present list of available commands
boot -- Load and boot an executable image
cat -- Concatenate (type) file(s)
copy -- Copy a file
delete -- Delete file(s)
dir -- List files in directories
flash_init -- Initialize flash filesystem(s)
format -- Format a filesystem
fsck -- Check filesystem consistency
help -- Present list of available commands
load_helper -- Load and initialize a helper image
memory -- Present memory heap utilization information
mkdir -- Create dir(s)
more -- Concatenate (display) file(s)
rename -- Rename a file
reset -- Reset the system
rmdir -- Delete empty dir(s)
set -- Set or display environment variables
set_bs -- Set attributes on a boot sector filesystem
set_param -- Set system parameters in flash
sleep -- Sleep a specified number of seconds
trap -- Cause a software breakpoint to occur
type -- Concatenate (type) file(s)
unset -- Unset one or more environment variables

Hi All,
okay, thanx 4 that..I set the following,
switch: set ip 192.168.0.34
switch: set subnet mask 255.255.255.0
switch: set tftp_server 192.168.0.12
switch: set tftp_file c2900xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC10.bin
I then tried to copy from the tftp,
switch: copy xmode: flash:c2900XL-hs-mz-112.8.11-SA6.bin
xmode:: permission denied
here is an output of the dir cmd,
switch: dir
List of filesystems currently registered:
flash[0]: (read-write)
xmodem[1]: (read-only)
null[2]: (read-write)
bs[3]: (read-only)
Am I getting the permission denied error from the tftp machine side, or, due to the xmodem being read-only..? Cheers.
P.S. I'm a newbie, currently studying for CCNA and am working part-time at a PC shop in Tokyo, where I have hands on opportunity.

You you cannot use TFTP to XMODEM an image in XL switch. You need to use send the file through the console port using an emulator such as hyperterminal. Read through the document I referenced in my earlier post.

Hi All,
yes, I'm using TeraTerm as my emulator, but, I get that permission denied error b4 getting the opportunity to choose, file/transfer/xmodem/send from within it. I don't see any reference on that page for this error message, hence my posting here. Cheers.

Hi All,
I'm now having success with this, with a Catatalyst 2950. Did not get the permission denied message. Why would I get it with the 2900..? It is a 4mb version, and I downloaded the appropriate file for it. Cheers.

Hi All,
well, what a day of weirdness in PC land. Now the 2900 is successfully downloading. I made no changes from any point. I'd luv to know what caused it not to work, initially. Cheers.
