Can anyone tell me how spanning tree calculates which port to block, it uses the fastest port as the root port, but i would like to know how the blocked port is selected, is it the slowest path back to the root that would be blocked ?

Hi Carl,

Actually, all ports start out in the blocking state, and only then transition through the states as STP calculates which ports will be in the forwarding state. The process is explained here:
