hello everyone
i need a tools / software to benchmark an old switch system in my costumer's site before he decided to buy the new catalyst 3500.
they are still using 5 year old IBM 8271 10/100 switch. and sometimes the switch hang out.
BUT he still want to see how far the performance will increased if they use the catalyst.
that's why i need the tools to show him what's his IBM switch "score" and what's the catalyst "score"
thanks

What specific parameters will you be benchmarking for this old switch?

maybe the throughput or total bandwidth running on the backplane
so i can compare it after using the catalyst
or anything wuould be just fine =)
thanks for your attention

See if http://www.mrtg.org is of some interest.

wow thanks :-)
but i think i cannot use the tool,
It was too complicated to setup.
and he just want to see the switch performance total bandwidth usage or whatever has anything to do to prove him that the switch is outdated and need to be replaced
do you have any other suggest ?
thanks for your kindly support.

do this. run a say 1 gig file transfer between multiple machines at the same time over the lan. use a stopwatch. now do it on a 3550 (if need be borrowed from your local cisco sales office)
when he sees the cisco tears his ibm up, he will be sold. also so him all the management and reporting capabilites in snmp, logging and rmon that exist in the 3550, once he sees per interface bandwidth graphs, logs on port collisions (saving time on pc slowness diagnostics, etc.), and how easy it is to configure and troubleshoot from the web interface, i think he will not balk at dropping 5K to get the cisco

Then have a look at http://cricket.sourceforge.net/. It's also a free ware like MRTG

take Concord's eHealth. Cool stuff, but not cheap....
