hello, i have just taking over the administration of a lan. i want to configure a switch which is in a rather unreacheable place, but i do not know how. There's no other cisco device connected to use CDP. I pinged the broadcast address (192.168.100.255)and go a reply from 192.168.100.11 (could this be the switch? i did a telnet to the ip an got this. NRG Maintenance Shell, User access verification (yeah, i dnt know the paasword.
Any explanations, could help.

it's a catalyst 2950 switch. i pinged from a computer connectrd to a non cisco switch which is connected to the 2950.

Hello,
If you are on the 192.168.100.0/24 subnet, you could take the ARP entries and use this link:
http://standards.ieee.org/regauth/oui/index.shtml
to find out which NICs are from Cisco Systems. A bit arduous, but effective.

Not sure what having the address is going to get you if you don't know the password. If you don't know the password then you'll have to go thru the password recovery procedure which requires plugging into the console port on the back of the switch .
