trunking between 2948 and 3550-24

currently the 2948 is set to switchport mode trunk. i want to gig-attach the 3550.

i've enabled switchport trunk encap dot1q on the 3550 but don't see any cmd like that for the 2948.

can someone shed some light on this on how to enable dot1q between the switches?

thanks

Looks like you might have a CAT2948G-L3 which is more like a router. You will need to configure sub-interfaces to trunk. The following tech tip(written for ISL) should help

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/25.html

forgive my ignorance. sub-int's are the fasteth ports right? what about the 2 x gige ports? i currently already have a gbic between 2 2948s. can i just daisy chain off the 2nd 2948 into the 3550 gbic?

to clarify:

i am installing a 3550-24 into an existing IDF. currently there are 2 2948's connected via gbic and the gige ports are set to "switchport mode trunk".

(i have setup numerous 3500's trunks but never a 2948 - i usually just do switchport trunk encap dot1q - and then connect the gbic cable)

You can configure sub-interfaces on gig ports of CAT2948G-L3 as well. Can you paste output of sh ver from the 2948G you have? I want to make sure wheter you have a CAT OS based L2 only CAT2948G or IOS based CAT2948G-L3.

Either way, you cannot configure "switchport mode trunk" on either type of 2948's. So I want to make see what switch you have.
