I just wanted to know how you can tell which 1700 series router it is that you're having simply from doing a show version? I'm having difficulty trying to locate the right IOS software for a 1700 series router and on the CCO, there are IOS version for different 1700 series routers. Thanks for your answer.

Sankar has an interesting approach to finding the model but I think there is a more simple way which usually will work. Here is the output of show version from a 1700 router. If you look at the line just below "export@cisco.com" you will find that the hardware model is clearly identified (in this case it is a 1721).

I believe you are trying to upgrade IOS on a remote router which you dont have physical access to ?

If the image name of the file in flash (or sh version) starts with c1710, the router is a 1710. Otherwise it could be either of the following:

1720, 1721, 1750, 1751, 1760

If the file in flash is a data image, then all the above routers can use the same IOS. When I mean data image, it means IP/ADSL, IP/ADSL/PLUS etc..

If its a voice image (IP VOICE feature set), only 1750/51/60 use voice feature set images.

To identify a voice image, do a show version and look for "ipvoice" in the image name. If thats the case you can download the latest IPVOICE feature set image from CCO Software center.

Usually IP/ADSL and similar feature set images have a "c1700-sy7" or "c1700-y7" or something similar. If this is true in your case, you can download any of the data images and upgrade the IOS on the router.

Hope that helps!
