Hi - have 2 subnets seprated by a 3620. How can I get WINS to pass through the router. I am having internittent issues whereby clients on 3x cannot resolve betbios name living on 1x side...which is where the wins servers are.

Hi

WINS uses UDP/TCP 135,137,138 and 139 ports.

i feel you may need to enable ip forwarding for these protocols in your 3620 box so as to have the WINS service enabled for the clients .

Some confusion here chaps.

Netbios name resolution protocols use these ports, and these protocols are largely broadcast based Peer to peer protocols. You need IP helpers to forward these broadcasts if you are relying on the Netbios name resolution protocols.

WINS is a different mechanism as it is unicast and server based. On a normal IP network you should have no problem with WINS resolution - it requires no specific router assistance. If you are having WINS resolution problems then you may have a server issue. Make sure that your WINS servers are correctly configured on your hosts as normally I find WINS "problems" are due to the fact that WINS is misconfigured on a subset of hosts.
