Monitor options by door

In some of our older security setups, we had monitors by the back door that would show 2-4 cameras outside so someone could see if anyone was outside the door.

The only way I can see to do this currently is to use SASD with a preconfigured view and then connect the computer running it somehow to the monitor.  The issue is, the monitor is not usually near to a computer that could run this, plus it seems a waste to use a whole computer just to run a couple of images from SASD.

I suppose there is no other way to do this easier, is there?  I wish you could run SASD or have someway to run a couple of feeds just off a Raspberry pi or something like that.

I hear ya.  It does seem like a considerable amount of overkill for an entire workstation.

We've actually used some Dell MFF 9020 models in the past.  You can get them with a VESA style mounting bracket and they tuck away pretty neat behind a display panel.  It is still a full blown workstation, however.

Someone *might* be able to create something that could request a session and attach directly to an RTSP stream from the Media Server for one or more cameras... and I BET it would be pretty light resource-wise as well... I just don't have the cycles to explore it myself.

Cheers!

Yeah, definitely a pain.  Not only that it requires a whole workstation, but the fact that a workstation doesn't easily sit near a monitor over a door, for example.  In the one case we did it, we put the workstation in another room and then ran a vga connection to the monitor using vga over ethernet.  The workstation we are using is an old one, since if it dies, all we have to do is put up anything else that will run SASD.  But I sure wish there was a more lightweight solution!

You know what would be awesome?  If someone contracted me to write a lightweight 'purpose built' software client that could say... run on Raspbian OS (for an RPi) that could negotiate the appropriate authentication against the VSM API and then pin up one or more RTSP feeds from the appropriate VSMS instance.  It's doable in  theory for a dedicated appliance (I'm thinking one or two streams... *maybe* a quad if the bitrates were low enough).

I wish they would.  I'm running into more issues with doing this.  It sounds like the Analog port working on a camera while n VSOM has been completely written out without a suitable replacement.  We've been left with numerous locations with monitors by the door and no easy way to get video to them from a camera.  It is extremely frustrating to have features taken away with no replacement.

Scott...this post was a year ago and I'm still in the same conondrum.  I am going to be looking for a sff type computer.  Have you done any of this type of install since the initial post that would have some models of computers that would work in this scenario?   I would think there may be many that work, but I'm not sure what resources are required. Basically I know it would need to run Windows so I could put SASD on it, but not sure beyond that as far as RAM, video capabilities, etc.

Unfortunately, no.  Nothing recent.  I've since been transitioned away from PhySec as a priority, but still try to keep an eye on these forums.

I'm still a fan of the DELL MFF workstations.  Even the lower-end models would likely suffice for a (low stream count) SASD instance.  As per usual... I'd pilot a test workstation first and evaluate how it performs.  Workstation Profiler could still be run against them as well.

ORRRRRRR... go wholly unsupported and perhaps try something like an RPi that makes scripted RTSP requests to VSM through the API (i.e. - Establish an authenticated session, and then request the stream from the appropriate VSMS instance).  :-S

Interesting... I've somehow been duped into creating another community account.  Not sure how that happened.  I hate these new forums :-(

Ha... yeah the rpi would be cheaper to be sure.  I think we are going to give a dell mff a try (or something similar, like a Lenovo Tiny).  Basically going to have to buy a full fledged computer then for each monitor.

So using remote walls wouldnt work in this case? Is it possible to have one PC reach 2-3 monitors or are they way to far away from each other.

Many years ago there was a UK company called BBV that had a light viewer for exactly what you are looking for. https://www.bbvcctv.com/product-page/ov-hd01 It says it supports VSM7 but I would test it out. It was many years ago when we used them in our lab.

Hmm how woudl that connect to VSOM?

You will have to look at the manual to see how it works. We had a demo unit for VSM6 and it authenticated to VSOM and delivered video from there.

Okay, I may have to take a look.  In the grand scheme of things it isn't a WHOLE log cheaper than buying a tiny PC if the cost listed there is right.
