Trying to learn more about VSOM

Tommy Holem

So I started a new position and inherited VSOM as part of my roles. At the time that I started, we had 2 physical VSOM servers at two location on our campus. 1 server recording/managing 2 locations (via p2p wireless connection and locally) and the other one recording/managing the other site.

I have since consolidated both servers to our Datacenter on a dedicated VM with 10 TB of storage.

Now, what I'm considering is if we ever expand to add additional cameras to other locations on our campus (locally) is it possible to have the cameras recording locally to a media server and use VSOM to manager the operations of it?

Is there a separate license for the media server portion of it and how do I just set up a media server only?

Thanks!

First of all you cannot have just media server to have recording facility for all cameras. In VSM deployment generally you can have

# Co-located server which is VSOM and VSMS running on same box or machine

# Independent Server which is VSOM is running on independent Machine or server and VSMS (Media Server) on another

# By Default Cisco provide 1 default license for media server which means you can add only 1 media server to VSOM if running into independent mode.if you want expand or increase the storage capacity you can add new media partitions to the same media server that will not required any license it  just adding storage partitions to same server . if not then you can add new media server in the environment. In that you need to have Media Server license while adding this server on VSOM and make it work.

Br, Nadeem Please rate all useful post.

So as long as I have a license for the additional Media server it shouldn't be a problem?

So example configuration:

1. VM Server with VSOM and VSMS located in our Primary Data Center ( with license of course)

2. VM or Physical Server with VSMS at a site location 10 cameras recording to it.

3. VM or Physical Server with VSMS at another site location 10 cameras recording to it.

with Server #1 being able to manage the configurations and viewing of recordings.

Hi Tommy,

Yes, you need the additional license on the media server license if you are using more than one media server.

Yes one VSOM (Operations Manager) is able to manage configurations and view the recordings from all this cameras.

Here is the small explanations on both the services:

1) Operations Manager:

  • Add, configure and monitor the cameras, servers, and encoders that provide live and recorded video.
  • View live and recorded video, save video clips, search thumbnail summaries of recorded video, use the camera, Pan,Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) controls, or configure pre-defined video Views and Video Walls.
  • Create recording schedules, define event-triggered actions, configure motion detection, and other features.
  • View a summary of system health for all devices, or device status, alerts and events.

2) Media server services: Configure, enable or disable server services, such as the Media Servers that manage video playback and recording. The Media Server service provides video streaming, recording and storage for the cameras and encoders associated with that server.

Hope this help to clear your query regarding the setup.

Thanks,

Jayesh
