RV220W and missing PPPoE service name option

Recently I bought RV220W router and found out that PPPoE connection option or profile do no have service name field at all. Unfortunately, my ISP requires this to be able to connect. I had done some research before buying this router by going through online device manager demos on cisco website. RV220's interface is not available, but RV215 is and I checked out some of the common features between both routers. Surprisingly RV215's PPPoE connection settings has service name option.

I suppose, unless there is new firmware update (my current router is already running the latest available firmware), this option cannot be added in the interface. What I want to know is, is there any way to configure the router to use the service name in PPPoE option or in PPPoE profiles? I don't think RV220W can be accessed via terminal/SSH or maybe even terminal. Can anyone help regarding this?

Hello,

That is very strange because it looks like they took down the RV220w and put the RV215w on top of it but with wrong information because the RV215w is just like the RV110w expect you can add 3g/4/g dongle to it and doesn't support SSLVPN.. which it states one of its features in the emulator page.

Other than that I am not too familar with the service name option for PPPoE but was concern about the miss information on the Online emulator page. Also went through the admin guide and didn't see any other options about service name like it is in the RV215w (looked in the admin guide as well).

Unless someone else has a suggestion or the feature is missing or named something different, the only thing I can think of that you could do is call Cisco support (866-606-1866) and request a feature to be added. You are also correct though you cannot terminal/ssh into these units, its all GUI.

I am sorry I couldn't be much more helpful but I know there used to be a gui for the RV220w and looks like they took it down. The only one I see up there that compares to the RV220w is the RV120w on a older firmware.. GUI has been changed since newer firmware.

Thanks,

Clayton Sill.

Good morning

Thanks for using our forum

Hi Dead Duck, my name is Johnnatan and I am part of the Small business Support community. There`s an option in Networking -->WAN  and the last option you can find “PpoE profiles” here you can add the specific profile you need.

I hope you find this answer useful,

Hi Jonathan,

Thank for replying, however, that isn't the option that I'm looking for. Within the WAN section and/or PPPoE Profile section there is no option to define PPPoE Service Name. From what I've gathered from reading on the net is that Service Name is usually not required for connecting to ISP's network for internet access, but some ISPs have this option set as mandatory. In case of my ISP, the latter is true.

All the routers that I've used previously by other companies like D-Link, TP-Link, Belkin and Netgear had this field/option in PPPoE configuration screen where I can enter my ISP's PPPoE service name... so you can imagine my surprise when I couldn't find this option in my "upgraded" Cisco router. The main reason I convinced my company to get Cisco RV220w router over consumer routers was overall network throughoutput of this model, VPN performance and filtering options. But amidst all advanced option, it was baffling to have something as basic as "PPPoE service name" option missing. Fortunately, we have a backup ADSL connection so we can stay connected, but the PPPoE connection that we have is higher bandwidth connection and we cannot connect to it due to limiations of the router.

As this point, our only option are unsubscribing from this connection and upgrade our ADSL connection to higher bandwidth, but that's not very economical. The second option, obviously, is to change the router, again, to some other brand where we are not faced with such inexplicable anamolies.

Obviously there is third option where I can basically configure my PPPoE connection on basic router and connect it to RV220 over DHCP, but that's just finding my own workaround for something that should have been there in first place in $225 router.

Hi Dead Duck, I apologize for the issues you are having, in order to resolve your problem, could you check your firmware version? The latest version is the 1.0.4.17 you can download it in cisco.com

http://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=283118607&flowid=24581&softwareid=282487380&release=1.0.4.17&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest

After the firmware upgrade I recommend you do a factory reset to your device.

I hope you find this answer useful,

Hello,

A new article with the article ID 4227 has been written explaining how to add the service name for the PPPoE profile and it's configuration on an RV220W device. Please let us know if this solves your issue or if you need further assistance.

Here is the link to view the article 4227 - IPv4 WAN (Internet) Point-to-Point over Ethernet (PPPoE) Configuration on RV120W and RV220W

Dear Dead Duck, I offer a very deep apology for the misinformation you have been provided. The RV220W does not offer a Service Name field, as you already know. It supports only the profile name which is not relevant to the connection.

If you like, I will be more than happy to create a service request for you and escalate it to the product management for a feature request.

Hello Tom & Prabhijit,

Sorry for not replying eariler as I didn't check the forum for a while now. I think so far we have established that RV220W router does not have option to add PPPOE Service Name anywhere in the interface or otherwise. At this point I can only hope that this will be fixed or provisioned in future firmware update. For now, I've made alternative arrangements to continue using the RV200W in my organizations network as I love the feature set & VPN/network performance of this router.

Probably my biggest complaints about this router would be (in following order)...

  1. No PPPOE Service Name option
  2. Slow GUI
  3. Slow DHCP server, takes time to issue IP addresses to systems when system connects to network.
  4. Sometimes randomly looses connection to modem connected on WAN (happens regardless of different modems used)
  5. Slowest reboot ever in my personal experience (but luckily it's rarely required)

Apart from that, I absolutely have no qualms about this model and I still think that I made right call in buying this router, despite some headache that was caused by PPPOE service name issue.
